Kasim Sulton April Fool's Day
01.00 - Thanks to everyone who e-mailed to say that they enjoyed the April Fool's Day joke on the front page of KasimInfo.com yesterday. As recently Kasim Sulton's name has frequently been mis-spelt, I thought that a page of his name spelt Kazim Sultan was appropiate this year. (If you missed it, then it can be viewed here.)

KasimInfo.com has a history of April Fool's Day tricks over the years. In 2002 a lot of people were fooled by a spoof interview from Rolling Stone Magazine with Kasim that was added. Click here to read it. When it was posted it had loads of Rolling Stone logos too. Some of the Kasim quotes are genuine but some were fabricated. Ironically the part about Kasim opening for Meat Loaf even actually came true (when I wrote this spoof, I had got him listed on Pollstar a few times and they assumed that was opening for Meat Loaf but we didn't know then that Kasim Sulton would eventually open most of the concerts). This was one of the best interviews that Kasim didn't do!

In 2003 there was a very mild prank as it was just listed on the "This Day" section "On This Day in 1994 Kasim Sulton changed his socks" or something mild like that.

In 2004 a business card that was supposed to have been Kasim's was posted to the website. (Click here to view it.) That year someone did e-mail to complain that they didn't think it a good idea to post Kasim's telephone number on the website!

In 2005 there was the infamous DougInfo.com page.

In 2006 there was The Nude Cars photo (which apparently fooled at least one member of the band!).

And last year the Blog was changed to be Sunday 1st April 2018!

Kasim Sulton's week
05.15 - This coming week Kasim Sulton embarks on the Japanese leg of the Todd Rundgren 2008 Tour!

Kasim has posted that he flies to Japan on Wednesday. Unfortunately there are no direct flights to Osaka from New York but alternatives are either changing in Los Angeles or Tokyo. A direct flight to Tokyo takes almost 14 hours.

On Friday and Saturday Kasim plays gigs as part of Todd Rundgren's Band in Osaka and apparently there are two gigs each day.

Kasim Sulton and Meat Loaf Meat Loaf tickets for UK concerts
13.45 - Yesterday tickets went on sale for 4 of the Meat Loaf concerts that Kasim Sulton will be playing in July in England. The concerts are:
Friday 4th - The Rec, Bath
Sunday 6th - Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire
Friday 11th - Castle Howard, York, North Yorkshire
Sunday 13th - Blickling Hall, Blickling, Norwich, Norfolk
The Broadlands, Castle Howard and Blickling Hall gigs are General Admission (standing) but the Bath concert is seated.

Two weeks ago tickets were listed to go on sale for these concerts but that was postponed until yesterday. Meat Loaf has changed the company who runs his official Fan Club and most fans believed that the delay in the tickets going on sale was so that the new company could hold the best seats for fan club members and set up special packages. Meat Loaf himself has posted in the past two weeks that he is trying to sort out deals for fan club members.

Consequently lots of fans did not attempt to buy tickets for the Bath (seated) concert when they went on sale. However other fans reported that they were able to purchase the front seats in all five front blocks which makes it appear unlikely that seats have been put aside. Naturally there have been numerous posts on various messageboards and mailing lists regarding this as fans who did not buy tickets are concerned and fans who did buy them do not want to give up the seats that they have already bought (the latter scenario happened previously on another tour).

Kasim Sulton at The Bitter End, New York City, NY, 03/28/08 - photo by Gary Goat Goveia Kasim Sulton at The Bitter End last night
08.00 - Last night Kasim Sulton played his fifth and final public gig this month. The gig last night was at The Bitter End in New York City and was packed! On stage with Kasim was Doug Kennedy (Jesse Gress was sick). Unfortunately fans reported problems watching the gig online.

Kasim played for about 50 minutes and even included an impromptu performance of Wooly Bully! Despite his set being affected by people in the bar area talking loudly (even with Kasim asking them to keep quiet and his audience chating "shut up, shut up at one point!) it was a great set.

Kasim also paid a really moving tribute to Shelly (Michelle Mercaldo) before singing One World. His encore was a duet with the opening act CC Coletti of Jim Steinman's Two Outta Three Ain't Bad.

The set list, photos and a review will be added later to KasimInfo.com.

Message from Kasim Sulton
07.45 - Kasim Sulton has updated his online journal here.

Kasim writes about the shows he's played this month and his plans for the next few months.

Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a gig at The Bitter End in New York City, NY

Kasim Sulton - photo by Jennifer Salyer Kasim Sulton's gig in New York City tonight
00.01 - This is the fifth and final of 5 public gigs that Kasim Sulton is playing this month. Also on stage tonight with Kasim at these gigs are Jesse Gress and Doug Kennedy.

There is no guarantee but often Kasim's set at this venue is streamed on the Internet on the venue website!

This will be Kasim Sulton's fifth appearance at The Bitter End in his own right and his first in over a year. The Bitter End is advertised as "New York City's Oldest Rock Club" and has a very prestigious history. Click here to read it all but since 1961 loads of people who are famous names now have played at this venue. Click here to read the list but it includes stars like Woody Allen, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates and Stevie Wonder!

One of the defining characteristics of The Bitter End is the brick wall that the stage is set against. According to one website The Bitter End can hold up to 350 people but it's well arranged so that everyone can see really clearly. There are tables right up to the front of the stage plus booths on the back wall or you can opt to sit at tables to the side area so that you look across the stage. There is also a bar area as soon as you walk into the venue which offers a good view too although you may have to put up with the next band arriving during Kasim's set! This is a venue that offers a good selection of drinks and they are all reasonably priced. If you sit at a table they like you to have a minimum of two drinks but there is no restriction at the bar.

The venue is really easy to find as it's in the center of Greenwich Village. The Bitter End website has a great page of directions which even includes if you're arriving by boat, helicopter or horse! There are also loads of places to park (for cars not helicopters!) in the immediate area too. If you can't find anywhere on the road, in the next block up Bleecker Street there's an underground parking lot which is very reasonably priced.

Kasim Sulton in Reverb Magazine Kasim Sulton in Reverb Magazine
07.15 - The Press section of KasimInfo.com has been updated with an interview with Kasim Sulton from Reverb Magazine from last year. Kasim speaks about touring with Todd Rundgren and Meat Loaf, plus his own music and basses.

This article appeared in 2007 but this is the first time that it has appeared on the Internet.

Kasim Sulton at The Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH last night
07.00 - Last night Kasim Sulton played his 4th of 5 public gigs this month. The gig last night was at The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, OH.

Kasim's set lasted almost 90 minutes and the set list was similar to at his other shows except that he played a two song encore (Don't Hold Me Back and Across The Universe) on his own after asking for a show of hands for which song he should play!

Kasim played in the larger Ballroom room at the venue as his audience size has outgrown the Tavern hall! Unfortunately the Ballroom was no better lit than the Tavern - the left side of Kasim's face was totally in shadow! Jesse Gress and Doug Kennedy played on stage with Kasim and afterwards all the band stayed signing autographs and chatting to fans for almost an hour.

The set list, reviews and photos will be added to KasimInfo.com soon.

Kasim Sulton Kasim Sulton at The Abbey Pub, Chicago last night
16.45 - Last night Kasim Sulton played a gig at The Abbey Pub in Chiacgo, IL. Kasim was on stage for almost 90 minutes and received not only a standing ovation from the large crowd but also people even stood at the front of the stage for his encore!

The set list and photos will be posted soon but meanwhile here is a great review by Janet Spahr (Peebles) of the gig:

"Kasim has evolved. For those that have been going to the shows from the beginning - he has grown into his own. And by Kasim's own admission - he takes baby steps - or to me - each step is a building block or the foundation to what has now become a fantastic show. And it will keep growing and evolving to maybe one day having something of a full band (ie - drummer). Or just a drummer as Kasim joked. And also Kasim has realized it is better to have fewer people who love the music than a huge crowd who could care less.

Tonight the room was full of people who love and admire the catalog of Kasim's work. People who would forgive a little mistake or missed lyrics. But there was none of that. It was a great performance by any standards. I personally like Kasim up there alone and unplugged but I also realize that an artist of this caliber flourishes with fuller sound and the intracacies of guitar that only Jesse and Doug can bring to the stage. I was blown away. It's like Jesse can just feel the music and it translates down to his fingers and out to us as beautiful music. Doug (trying his best to hide in the back) could not. His guitar work filled in the sound and added his own personal touch - as well as getting a chance to take the lead. I just loved the exchange of sounds - and with 3 hands to watch - I found myself going from guitar to guitar to guitar - oh yeah - I did see their faces too!! ha ha

The music flowed from one song to the next really easily. Kasim's own music just fits into the Utopia and Todd songs he has chosen to play and seems to me to be a cohesive and nice representation of his catalog of work.

Wish I could have gone to Atlanta and on to the last couple of solo shows.

Thanks Kasim and Jesse and Doug for bringing your music to Chicago and to me. I loved it."

Kasim Sulton's gig in Cleveland, Ohio tonight
16.30 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the fourth public gig of this series of gigs. The concert tonight is at The Beachland Ballroom which is about 10 miles outside the center of Cleveland, Ohio.

This will be Kasim's 7th solo gig at this venue but his first inside the larger Ballroom instead of the Tavern. (The Tavern has always been packed when he's played here before!) The address of the venue is 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland, Ohio, 44110-1659 and the telephone number is 216 383 1124.

Doors open at 7.00pm with the show starting at 8.00pm. Tickets are $25 on the door or $22 in advance. Click here to purchase tickets online. The Elements featuring Denny Carleton is the opening act. Their music is described as "Satirical but spiritual pop songs with roots in the 60's".

Kasim will probably take the stage at around 9.00pm and also on stage with Kasim at tonight's gig will be Jesse Gress and Doug Kennedy.
