Tuesday 6th June 2006 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a concert on The New Cars Road Rage Tour in Vienna, VA, plus The New Cars will be on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson
Kasim Sulton, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Todd Rundgren and Prairie Prince are The New Cars It's Alive Album Reviews
18.30 - Although the album only went on sale today, already several reviews of the album have been posted online by professional reviewers. Unfortunately most only mention Kasim Sulton (and his contribution) in passing but the reviews are interesting to read:

The best review of the album (although it doesn't read like that at the start of the review) is from TheTrades.com which uses the quote "My measure of acceptability was riding on how they were going to be able to pull off "Drive" without Orr. Bassist Sulton took the lead on this one, and the original was effectively evoked for me, for which I was pleasantly surprised". (The other Kasim mention is "Former Utopia bandmate Kasim Sulton joined to play bass".)

MonstersAndCritics.com - the Kasim mentions are "bassist Kasim Sulton (who worked harmonic magic with Rundgren in Utopia)" and "Rundgren is an inspired choice to fill Ocasek's role of wry lyrical observer, particularly with Sulton aboard as his heaven-sent harmonic foil. (The latter admirably handles lead vocals on "Drive," late bassist Benjamin Orr's signature song.)".

Live Daily.com - the Kasim mentions are "The bulk of "It's Alive" is an early concert performance featuring the new lineup--vocalist Todd Rundgren, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes, bassist Kasim Sulton and drummer Prairie Prince--with a few new songs in both live and studio forms." and "Utopia's Sulton and Tubes drummer Prince lay the foundation".

RollingStone.com - the Kasim mention is "On this roughly recorded live set, former Utopia bassist Kasim Sulton and ex-Tubes drummer Prairie Prince join two original Cars, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and lead guitarist Elliot Easton, plus, most strangely, new frontman Todd Rundgren".

This is a link to a press release about the album and it's recording.

Elliot Easton Not Dead - 'It's Alive' in Stores Today
Photo of Kasim Sulton at Cuyahoga Falls concert by Michele Kotlarsky 17.45 - Using the PR rule about not wasting any chance to get some publicity(!), in a press release which appears to come from 10th Street Entertainment, they tie in a link with "the bus incident" and the release of The New Cars album It's Alive today!

The press release says that "The band was asleep when the tour bus swerved to avoid a vehicle during the early morning hours of Monday, June 5th. Easton was thrown from his bunk and injured. Easton was taken to a local hospital where he told the doctor "I've been waiting 17 years for this tour, I'm not missing any shows." No shows have been canceled and the tour continues with their next destination in Vienna, VA at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap on Tuesday, June 6."

Kasim Sulton receives a passing mention as being one of the band - "The New Cars are original Cars' members guitarist Elliot Easton and keyboardist Greg Hawkes, vocalist/guitarist Todd Rundgren, fellow Utopia bassist/vocalist Kasim Sulton and former Tubes drummer Prairie Prince."

Review of the Cuyahoga Falls concert
17.30 - In the interests of fair reporting, ChicagoSumTimes.com has a bad review of the Cuyahoga Falls concert (as far as Kasim is concerned). As it will probably disappear at some point, it won't be repeated here.

08.15 - Some really great photos of The New Cars from the concert which they played in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on Sunday evening have been added to the Photos section of the website or click here for the direct link. The page also leads to pages for each individual member of the band.

Many thanks to Michele Kotlarsky for all these photos.

The New Cars:It's Alive
The New Cars album: It's Alive featuring Kasim Sulton, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Todd Rundgren and Prairie Prince as The New Cars 04.00 - The New Cars album It's Alive is released today in the US!

This will be Kasim Sulton's 115th album!

This album is called released on Eleven Seven Music in association with ADA (a Warner Music Group company). The album was recorded live at Center Staging Studios in Burbank, California during January 2006 over four nights. The new release includes classic Cars songs recorded live plus three never-before-released studio tracks written by Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes and Todd Rundgren. Kasim Sulton sings lead on Drive and plays bass and sings background vocals on all the other tracks.

The track listing is:
1. Just What I Needed (4:12)
2. Let's Go (3:49)
3. Candy-O (2:50)
4. You Might Think (3:13)
5. Best Friend's Girl (4:12)
6. I Saw The Light (3:02)
7. You're All I've Got Tonight (5:23)
8. Not Tonight (3:33)
9. Drive (4:05)
10. Moving In Stereo (5:15)
11. Shake It Up (3:46)
12. Dangerous Type (4:25)
13. Bye Bye Love (5:02)
14. Open My Eyes (3:02)
15. Good Times Roll (4:53)
16. Not Tonight (Studio version, previously unreleased) 3:25)
17. Warm (new studio recording, previously unreleased) (4:04)
18. More (new studio recording, previously unreleased) (3:41)

All the live recordings were produced by The New Cars, recorded by Mark Linett and mixed by Todd Rundgren. The album was engineered by Mark Linett and Phillip Broussard. The drums on Not Tonight and More were performed by Kenny Aronoff (which could indicate that those two tracks were recorded around the time of the photo session / video interview which did not include Prairie Prince as he was touring with The Tubes at the time).

The track More is probably the most Utopia-ish track released in the past 20 years, mainly due to the blend of Kasim and Todd's vocals!

The New Cars: It’s Alive will be released next week in the UK and the rest of Europe. Click here to view Kasim's Discography.

(On a personal note, I bought the album at the Pala concert. Despite taking a huge stack of CDs with me on my trip, for the other 30 hours of driving or so that I did on the West Coast, I didn't take the CD out of the CD player - it kept my attention that much!)

The New Cars in Vienna, VA
Kasim Sulton 03.45 - Tonight The New Cars (Kasim Sulton, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Todd Rundgren and Prairie Prince) will be playing the 15th concert of their 2006 Road Rage Tour. The concert tonight is in the 10th state of the tour - Vienna, VA at The Wolftrap within The Filene Center. Kasim last played this venue in August last year.

Kasim Sulton The Filene Center originally opened in 1971 but on 4th April 1982 a fire completely destroyed the facility so a newer structure was built of Douglas Fir and Southern Yellow Pine. Kasim Sulton 3,868 of the seating is under cover with open sides that look out onto the tall trees and rolling hills of the park. The remainder of the seating (3,160) is uncovered on a sloping lawn where patrons can bring picnics to enjoy before and during the performance. The total capacity is 7,028. The stage is 116' wide x 64' deep x 102' high.

Tickets for this concert vary between $25 for the lawn and $42 (plus charges) for the covered area. Yesterday the best seats available were in the 18th row. This is a venue which also has a lot of regular patron who buy seats for the whole season of concerts.

The weather forecast for the sound check is that it will be 76 degrees with isolated thunderstorms and for the concert itself it should be 68 degrees with "a few showers" and a 30% chance of precipitation. The wind is likely to only be 3mph so this may be their most comfortable outdoor concert of the tour so far!

The concert starts at 8.00pm with The New Cars expected to take the stage at about 10.00pm. Blondie are the opening act.

Pre-concert Boston Press
Kasim Sulton in Phoenix, Arizona - photo by Jen Schiffbauer 12.15 - In some pre-concert press for the Boston, MA concert on Wednesday Brett Milano has written a great detailed article on ThePhoenix.com called Bye-Bye-Ric. Quotes in the article include:

"The remaining Cars have gone a step further with Rundgren, effectively merging with his late-’70s/early- ’80s band Utopia. Bassist Kasim Sulton was the Ben Orr of Utopia — the sex symbol who sang the romantic tunes. (He sings Drive in The New Cars.)"

"Not surprisingly, the live portions of The New Cars’ It’s Alive (Rhino) sound like Utopia doing The Cars."

"It’s fun, the arrangements are accurate, and it’s more lively than the notoriously static, Ric Ocasek-led Cars were once they’d discovered sequencers."

"It’s not The Cars, but it is a fresh take on material that holds up just fine."

"The jury’s still out on whether The New Cars will last beyond the current tour with Blondie, which brings them to the Pavilion on June 7. "It’s a band for the purposes of an album," Rundgren says. "And it’s going to use up everybody’s resources for the next year. After that, if we’re all still friends we’ll discuss the possibility of some new music.""

Following that article, BostonHerald.com has an interesting article / discussion beween Larry Katz and Brett Milano about whether The New Cars is a good thing or not!. Interesting quotes from that article (featuring both sides of the coin) are:

"But the arrival of this year’s model has been met with as much dismay as glee. For every fan eager to again enjoy My Best Friend’s Girl and Drive, there’s another wishing The Cars’ legacy had been left to rust in peace."

"It’s pathetic seeing these Cars remnants and Todd Rundgren shamelessly exploiting fan nostalgia."

"It would be if they sounded as lame as the fake Queen and Doors bands did. But to judge from their new CD, The New Cars are having more fun with the material than Ric Ocasek did with his pickup crew at Harpers Ferry last spring. Yeah, it’s basically Utopia playing a Cars tribute set - but since those were two of the greatest arena bands of their era, I have no problem with that. "

"Elliot and Greg just want to perform the songs they helped arrange and record, and had to sit on the sidelines all these years while Ocasek hemmed and hawed. I’m sure they’d revive Ben Orr if it was possible. But they’ve made it clear who’s in the lineup and even amended the name of the band. And don’t forget The Cars were a pretty stiff live act. The band on It’s Alive really does play everything live - it’s lots rougher than the real Cars, but in some ways preferable."

"The New Cars have at least said they’ll make a proper studio album if this tour’s a success. So maybe everyone will be better off if we catch the tour and have a few cheap thrills in the meantime."

Kasim Sulton Kasim's Journal updated
04.15 - Kasim Sulton has updated his online journal about the gig in the Chicago area yesterday. He starts with the phrase "We played our first completely sold out show tonight. It was really cool. There was about 14,000 people in attendance at a venue here that I haven't had the pleasure of performing at before."!

TheNewCars.com has a photo of Kasim playing charades at the Fan Party last night here.

The New Cars in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
Kasim Sulton, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Todd Rundgren and Prairie Prince are The New Cars 04.00 - Tonight The New Cars play their first concert in the heart of Utopia and Todd Rundgren's main fanbase, Cleveland, Ohio! The concert tonight is at the Blossom Music Center (now a House Of Blues venue) in Cuyahoga Falls and is a venue which Kasim Sulton has played a few times before, the last time being in 1996 with Meat Loaf. The venue is located within 800 acres of natural forest and concerts have been held here for 30 years. The venue website says that cameras are not allowed at the concert (but most venues have said that so far on this tour!).

The concert starts tonight at 7.30pm (doors open at 6.00pm) with Kasim expected to take the stage at 9.30pm. This is easily the largest venue of the tour so far as the capacity is 19,551 (reserved 6,051 and lawn 13,500). This venue held a few special auctions for the front seats with disappointing results. Yesterday regular seats were available in the fifth row of the venue for $76.25 (plus charges). Lawn tickets are only $20 and the Meet and Greet package here is $396.25.

The temperature tomorrow for the sound check is expected to be about 64 degrees with a strong 16mph wind, a 30% chance of precipitation and chances of isolated thunderstorms. For the concert itself the forecast is 61 degrees still with a 30% chance of precipitation but the wind will have (hopefully!) dropped to 12mph. Sunset tonite is at 8.54pm.

FreeTimes.com has a good pre-concert interview with Todd Rundgren here by Jeff Niesel. The interview was conducted at the beginning of the tour and includes the following quotes:

"Todd's backed by original Cars guitarist Elliot Easton, former Utopia bassist Kasim Sulton and former Tubes drummer Prairie Prince."[And Greg Hawkes!]

"The four living members were in discussions for awhile. Ric Ocasek and David Robinson weren't into the radical change in lifestyle. The next logical thing was to find somebody else to front the group. I got a call from Elliot, and we just played together to see what it sounded like. We got together last August in a rehearsal space in Burbank. It sounded pretty convincing. We decided to continue on and lo and behold, here we are."

"I know that some people were expecting something else. There was idle chatter about a Utopia reunion. That wouldn't have lasted very long anyway. It never became a serious consideration with us for non-musical issues. I still would have had to find a gig. I wasn't going to turn it down because there might have been a Utopia thing."

"Did you ever see the original Cars back in the day?
We played together once at Nelson Ledges with Cheap Trick. That was a lot of fun. I think we played the World Series of Rock with them, too. Elliot played on an album that I produced in the late '80s by Jules Shear.
"

Cleveland.com (The Plain Dealer) also has an interview from a couple of weeks ago with Todd Rundgren (the link is here) in pre-concert press. Comments in this article include:

""If you compared the two bands live next to each other, this band would kick the old Cars' [expletive]," Rundgren fearlessly declared by phone last week from a tour stop in San Francisco."

"Rounding out The New Cars are Rundgren's longtime rhythm section of Kasim Sulton (bass) and Prairie Prince (drums), who also has played with The Tubes."

"On tour with Blondie, The New Cars have the blessing of Ocasek and former Cars drummer David Robinson. "The bottom line is, going back out on the road would not satisfy some deep-seated desire for them," said Rundgren, 57. "

"The Cars and Rundgren often crossed paths on the road. Easton and Rundgren went on to work together on various studio projects. "When we started discussing this, it wasn't like I was talking to complete strangers," Rundgren said. "The first thing we did was play together, to see if it was believable at all. It came together fairly easily.""

""I really don't have a problem with joining another band and doing material that isn't all my own," Rundgren said. "There are practical aspects from an economic standpoint, too. . . . The scale and scope of this allow us to be able to guarantee everyone in the band a reasonable amount of income.""

""Kasim and Prairie are the rhythm section I've worked with the most consistently over the past 20 to 30 years, so this is more like two bands coming together, as opposed to one guy stepping in for the frontman. It made it a lot easier for us to merge the musical personalities.""

The New Cars Road Rage Tour The New Cars Road Rage Tour Mileage
03.45 - The New Cars route is almost due east today (after going south to get around the lake). It's quite a long trip considering there was a concert last night - 388 miles. That's 5 hours 45 minutes by road or just over an hour by air (my guess is that they will have travelled by bus overnight).

Highland Park, IL to Cuyahoga Falls, OH - 388 miles.

Total Tour Mileage - 7,242 miles.

Photo of Kasim Sulton and The New Cars at The Gibson Amphitheater, Universal City Ravinia Festival pre-concert press
18.00 - NWITimes.com has an interesting pre-concert article about The New Cars' concert tonight at the Ravinia Festival. Click here to read it but some interesting quotes are:

"We have a hearty touring schedule to take care of before we think about getting into the studio," Todd Rundgren said. "Then we have this new record coming out, our first demonstration of the new hybrid. If people respond well to that, it'll be more likely that we would continue to another new record. If they respond poorly to that, we just might end up having only this one record out.""

""The Cars and Utopia were contemporaries (in the '70s and '80s)," Todd said Tuesday, en route to a performance in Denver. "We played together on stages and got to see each other up close and dig each other's music … I think we were fond of what each other was doing. It's not such a strange idea for this particular group of musicians to get together. I was also a big fan.""

"They rounded out their lineup with singer-bassist Kasim Sulton, who backed Rundgren in the past as member of his Utopia, and Prairie Prince, who pounded the skins for The Tubes."

"Rundgren sees a lot more shows on his new band's horizons. "We're only just in the beginning of the first leg of what we expect will be eight to 12 months of touring altogether," he said."

Kasim Sulton and The New Cars in Los Angeles, California - 20th May 2006 The New Cars Tour
09.45 - The New Cars Road Rage Tour 2006 section of the website has been updated with comments from fans and reviewers (and Kasim Sulton!) about the first 7 concerts of the tour (up until San Diego) plus links to other websites.

The same for the other concerts will be added soon.

Kasim and The New Cars in Highland Park, IL
Kasim Sulton and The New Cars at the Ravinia Festival 07.15 - Tonight at about 9.30pm Kasim Sulton, Prairie Prince, Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton and Todd Rundgren play the 13th concert of The New Cars Road Rage Tour. The concert tonight is at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois (about 35 minutes north of Chicago). The concert starts at 7.30pm, the park opens at 5.00pm and Blondie will again be the opening act. This venue has been hosting concerts since 1904!

The front block of the venue is totally sold out (there are not even any individual seats) but there are seats available in the side section for $85 plus charges. There are some lawn seats available too at $20 (or $5 for children) but the venue expects them to sell out before show-time! According to this thread lots of the tickets for this venue went to people who made a minimum $250 donation to the venue so had first chance at the seats. There is also an outcry in that thread as people who bought the VIP packages were moved to lawn seats due to that. The covered pavilion seats 3,200 people and according to this page on the venue website, the stage is not visible from the lawn and instead the show is "broadcast" to the lawn! (Kasim is not often shown on screens at these venues!)

The weather forecast today is expected to be 71 degrees and sunny (with a 11mph wind) for the soundcheck and 61 degrees and clear (with a 6mph wind from the north east) for the concert itself. Sunset is at 8.22pm tonight and there is a 20% chance of precipitation during the concert.
