Kasim Sulton at The Night Of The Proms, Cologne - 11/17/01

Security was VERY tight at this venue, we all had to submit to a body search as well as having our bags checked. According to the diagram, they were searching for cameras, recording equipment, knives, guns and red hands ( we couldn’t understand what that picture meant!)! As there was a long delay waiting for the search, some people missed the beginning of the concert so the compere apologised for that.

The Festhalle is a smallish arena compared to the other places Kasim has played so far on this tour but thankfully the crowd were far better than the last two nights! There was standing in front of the stage and tiers of seats with balconies above. Unfortunately the venue was originally built for shows to be staged in the middle so some people in parts of the balconies had to look over their shoulder to see! The stage was also longer than at other places so that once the great Patrick de Smeet missed getting to the front of the stage in time!

It was exactly the same set list as the last two nights (but with Kasim wearing a black suit and grey T-shirt) but tonight Meat Loaf got a better reaction than Chris de Burgh! The latter’s voice is getting better but he still missed all the high notes in Lady In Red again!

Tonight Meat Loaf messed up No Matter What as he started to sing the same verse twice! After a line or so he realised his mistake and switched to the correct verse! Kasim’s vocals sounded really great tonight in that particular song!

The people of Frankfurt (Frankfurters?!!) seemed to know the clapping part of You Took The Words Right Outta My Mouth which made a nice change and they absolutely loved Anything For Love. I don’t understand it but Patti Russo always gets a big round of applause as she starts singing her solo part in that - I could understand it more on other tours when that was her first appearance on stage but she’s already sang two songs and I’m sure that most of the males in the audience have already noticed both her and Pearl!

After Kasim has finished singing in Anything For Love (during the long drawn out “screwing around” part) he usually wanders over to where Laurie Wiseman is waiting and they chat! Tonight the piano (on wheels again!) was very close to the orchestra and with Patti standing in front of the piano he was hemmed in! As he’s so slim he eventually managed to squeeze by the violinists!

It was another long Paradise By The Dashboard Light tonight! Meat Loaf started off by showcasing Laurie Wiseman, then featured John Miceli before moving to John Miles and finally Mark Alexander - it’s just a shame to me that he omits the most talented musician on stage!

Tonight, as it was a good audience, Meat Loaf got us to sing the word “Light” again. Considering the venue holds about 7,000 it certainly wasn’t a very good effort by the crowd so he walked off stage, followed soon after by Kasim and then the entire string section of the orchestra started to get up too! It was hilarious! From my vantage point tonight I could see that later in the song when Kasim goes into the orchestra, he just stood by the harp rather than being able to find a spare chair!

Yellow Submarine was great again tonight even though Kasim hasn’t had a microphone for a while! Seeing Chris de Burgh skip across the stage was an eye-opener! The compere tonight had a miniature kid’s piano on stage (one that was small enough to hold in his hands) and Meat Loaf found it so he was picking out the tune of Yellow Submarine while John Miles sang it! Again I was told later that there was a close-up of Kasim on the video screens and apparently he had a massive smile on his face! Kasim always makes a point of going to the far right of the stage towards the end of that song and always deliberately waves to the people on that side which I’m sure they really appreciate!

Roll on Wednesday night…..!
