MORE UTOPIA

Sanctuary releases Utopia's Live In Boston 1982 DVD-Video on 24 January.
RC asked multi-instrumentalist Kasim Sulton what he's been up to...

Tell us about your memories of the show.
The band had just gone through some major upsets and I'd left for about six months prior to the recording of the Utopia album, which we were promoting. I was grateful to be welcomed back, though my tail was between my legs. We finished recording and were at the top of our game. We had fun being together and made fun of each other.

What have you been doing over the past year or so?
Aside from playing with Joan Jett, Meat Loaf, Patty Smyth and Todd [Rundgren], I've been doing solo shows for my Quid Pro Quo CD (on Sphere Sound Records). I'm currently working on material for a third CD which I'm going to be releasing later this year, and this month I'll be touring with Patty and Scandal. Then Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell III is scheduled to begin. I can also be found most weekends on Broadway in New York filling in for my good friend Tommy Brynes on guitar in the Billy Joel musical Movin' Out.

Is there anything unreleased in the archive?
I'm not sure. I know that we did over-record on a few albums, but I think most tracks have made it out in one form or another.

What was the first record you bought?
Meet The Beatles. I watched the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and felt that my fate was sealed. Nothing was going to stop me being a musician. Take a look at my school records and you'll see how determined I was!

What was the last record you bought?
Four by Jonathan Brooke, from The Story.

What's your favourite record ever?
I could be cheeky and say Victoria Beckham's CD but, I won't. If I said Sgt. Pepper I'd be boring.

What's your most interesting record?
While browsing through Amoeba record store in Los Angeles recently, I came across a CD of rhapsodies by George Enescu, Rumanian Rhapsody No.1 In A Major. I love it!

What little-known fact is there about you that would surprise fans?
I don't eat mushrooms, ever and I only buy honey from Fortnum & Mason. Every time I go to the UK, I buy at least 20 jars of it.

Have you any unfulfilled ambitions?
Sure. I've yet to reach my full potential and I'd love to take a year off and travel the world, just looking - South America, Northern Africa, a few European countries, Turkey, and I'd like to go back to Saudi Arabia. I tried busking once in Belgium, which was interesting - no-one listened! My biggest gotta-do is acting. I tried community theatre once, but had to leave before opening night because I was going on tour.

Who would you most like to play with?
Paul McCartney - we'd complement each other well - and Nik Kershaw. I'm a huge fan.

Will Utopia ever reform to play a classic set / tour?
It just might happen. I can't say it will, and I won't say that there's no chance that it could happen. I just prefer to keep an open mind and if it's meant to happen, then it will.
