Comments by SueW

No time to write a full review as 6 concerts in 9 days (plus work) means lack of time! Instead I'll just add a few comments.

  • I'd heard that this gig was selling badly (only 400 out of 1,200 tickets was quoted) but I don't have a clue how another 800 could have been accommodated in this venue as the floor was packed!
  • A frightfully polite guy apologised for having to look inside my handbag (I'm not sure quite what he was looking for!) and the crowd there was generally very polite other than one guy near me who kept calling out that Todd should be playing more guitar!
  • Above the floor (maybe 6 feet up) was a balcony with the bar and then another balcony a lot higher up. I went and stood on Kasim's side of the stage on the bar balcony and immediately out came Kasim from the backstage area and started chatting to someone behind the sound-desk. As he was only about 2 foot in front of me (and 6 foot down!) I could hear everything he was saying so I moved across to Jesse's side of the balcony and in the end that meant that I had a better view of Kasim on stage (other than when Todd wandered across)! This is probably the only tour when Kasim can be seen better from the other side of the stage due to Todd's arch.
  • They were on stage from about 8.10pm until 10.25pm. Before Truth started they had some sort of Requiem music playing (that will suit the venues for the next two nights!) which I don't remember from the US concerts I attended.
  • Todd didn't talk much during the first half of the show...but made up for it in the second!
  • No Temporary Insanity tonight.
  • I'm no musician but it seemed to me that Todd's guitar was a bit out of tune during Beloved Infidel and then he tuned it before Lunatic Fringe.
  • Kasim doesn't sing at all during Liars.
  • Kasim seemed to keep fiddling with his ear pieces and also was having some trouble with the sound so he got someone to fix it. He also indicated that there was some trouble in Prairie's domain so a guy with a torch did something there.
  • That set must really take it out on Todd's voice (especially Liars).
  • Kasim fluffed a line slightly in God Said as he was singing another "Just get over yourself" when there shouldn't have been one...or at least he sang "Just"!
  • When Prairie did his drum solo in Green Onions, the band missed their cue to start playing again so he had to repeat it!
  • They were about to play Sweet (Kasim had taken his bass off and had his keyboards down) when Todd did something (maybe to his computer keyboard?) so they couldn't play it then. He said that some people wanted to bring their children to this show and now they would be glad that they didn't.
  • I was quite surprised how loudly the English sang the Mother F****** words!
  • In Born To Synthesise, both Jesse and John played long solos but, as usual, Kasim only played a couple of bars of his bass solo as Todd walked back on stage - he said that he had "saved" us from a bass solo! Todd then joked that the band appeared to think that they were paid per note! However they were actually being paid a set amount less so much per note (later he said that Jesse was already into next weeks paycheck!). He did say that Kasim knew the way things worked so Kasim said into the microphone that he was saving himself and Todd joked that he was saving it for Manchester (the last concert on this leg of the tour).
  • When Todd introduced Kasim as "daughter Judy" he said that Kasim was the only one who could get away as being a girl!
  • We had the "waking Todd" part in Born To Synthesise again including Todd thinking it was a Father waking him and then him telling us that he's not a Catholic.
  • The audience really got going in the For The Want Of A Nail / Hello It's Me / Just One Victory part of the set!
  • Kasim looked at Jesse near the end of Just One Victory and shook his head so he stayed in his pod.
  • In case Mr Polite was looking for a camera in my handbag (and because the lighting on Kasim is bad) I only took a few photos during Just One Victory.
  • All in all, I think this was one of my favourites (after NYC) of the 5 gigs on this tour that I've seen so far.
  • Bristol was built too far away from London!
Roll on Birmingham on Wednesday....
