Kasim Sulton KSulton Bass Brochure
12.00 - Archer Guitars have produced a 4 page brochure about the KSulton Bass which was available at the NAMM Conference recently in California.

As well as lots of info about the bass there are several nice quotes about Kasim Sulton including "These performers and countless others have sought Kasim out for the brilliant musicianship and distinctive style he brings to all his endeavors. He has earned the undivided respect of his peers and his discerning fans alike.""

Kasim Sulton Kasim and The New Cars
17.00 - A review and some comments about The New Cars gig which Kasim Sulton played in Burbank, CA a week last Friday (20th) has been added to the Gigs section of the site or click here for the direct link.
Kasim Sulton Kasim and The New Cars
09.30 - On the 10th Street servers there are 13 new photos of 4 out of the 5 of The New Cars (no Prairie Prince). Click here for the direct link. (Kasim Sulton is in every photo.)

On the same server there is about a 4 minute video clip of the 4 members being interviewed - click here for that direct link. (It appears that you need QuickTime 7 to view the video but that can be downloaded for free here.) If you are unable to view the video on their server then this is a 13 second clip of Kasim explaining why he wanted to be in the band - this clip will play with Windows media players.

There are several clips in the video of Kasim talking to camera (plus being measured for clothes!) and a great quote from him is "It's safe to say that it's going to be a really good live kick ass band"!

Below are some stills from the video:

New Cars music
17.45 - It appears that an album of new songs may happen as one fan posted on a mailing list about asking Kasim Sulton about new songs for The New Cars. The quote was "I asked Kasim who had written the new tune "But Not Tonight" and he said it was basically a band composition, and that there were plenty more in the works."
Official Kasim Sulton Merchandise
17.00 - CafePress.com (the only website which stocks official Kasim Sulton merchandise) has savings on domestic shipping of orders of $50 or more until 3rd February.

Kasim and The New Cars
01.15 - Peter D. has an entry in his Blog called "Kasim event turned out to be Rundgren-Cars showcase!" about The New Cars gig on Sunday. One quote is "I expected to see Kasim with an acoustic guitar and a small band (if only!!!).
Kasim Sulton Video Of The Week

Kasim Sulton Kasim and Meat Loaf

17.15 - it's not been confirmed but someone at one of The New Cars gigs last weekend said that they heard Kasim saying that he will be working with Meat Loaf from Thursday until Sunday this week.

Rumors about Kasim and The New Cars
Kasim Sulton 17.00 - Both during and after The New Cars performances last week, there were a number of rumors (probably some true and some false) circulating so I thought I would list some of them below:
  • The tour starts in May.
  • The New Cars will be playing a world tour as headliners.
  • The New Cars will be supporting other bands during their tour.
  • There may be another performance on Monday evening (tonight) to a closed list.
  • The performance on Monday is no longer going ahead as they were so pleased with Sunday's gig.
  • There will be a one-off performance in April.
  • There were officials from Rhino Records attending the gigs as they were involved in the arrangements.
  • All the band wore identical clothes each night so that they could edit together a DVD of the best performances of each song. [Not true as Todd wore a different shirt on Friday and Sunday]
  • They have only rehearsed about half the set list on the tour. The other songs will be a mixture of Cars and Todd tunes.
  • The band has been brought together by Allen Kovac of 10th Street Entertainment.
  • Celebrities who are reported to have been at the performances include Christopher Cross, Doug Fieger (from The Knack) and Weird Al Yankovic. [True as I saw (and recognised!) him there.]
  • All the band went to see a Devo gig last week.
  • These performances were just rehearsals for the band but had an audience in case they are used for a DVD.
  • These performances were show-cases to create a "buzz" about the upcoming tour.
  • Kasim and The New Cars
Kasim Sulton 09.00 - Regular readers of this website will know that I report both positive and negative things about Kasim here but as far as I could see there have been only positive things posted about Kasim's performances in The New Cars! These have been comments posted by fans of Kasim, Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf and The Cars and they all mention Kasim's professionalism, his bass playing and about how personable he was.

    Comments include:
"Kasim was great. He mingled with the fans, shook hands, chatted it up with ANYONE who approached him. There was NO EGO whatsoever with this guy. Totally down to earth. He was a total professional, he sung Drive, and did a damn fine job of it, play great bass, and sung backup as well. The guy is a true class act, and a true professional in every manner. He has my respect." [From a Cars fan]

"Kas can SMOKE that bass when he wants to, and on the closing Bye Bye Love he did just that!"

"Kasim Sulton is considered one of the top bassist's around. This is what David [Robinson] told me, as well as my friend Ricky, another very well respected Bass player. David also told me that when they were all talking about re-forming the original Cars, there was a VERY short list of bass players, and Kasim was on the top of that list."

"Kasim, well, what can you say? The dude is a world-class vocalist and bassist, and he had his moments; his harmony vocals were pop-perfection."

"Then there is Kasim. A true professional and I don’t know what he’s doing, eating right, working out, going to the spa or what, but he is looking younger than ever and playing fantastic. And we all know what we will be getting from Kasim, calm cool bass thunder in your face. Putting Prairie Prince and Kasim together, is like hitting the autobahn with the pedal to the metal."

"I do hope that Kasim gets to play a bigger role in the show with singing more lead...he's probably the hardest working guy in the business and always is a loyal soldier to whoever he is supporting whether it be Meat Loaf, Todd, Movin' Out, etc. it's time for him to be rewarded. In addition, I love that he reached out to all his fans directly with his stash of tickets."

"Kasim, the bass player is extremely nice, very cordial, and is chatting with lots of people. He's very approachable, and very friendly. A really nice, decent guy."

"Kasim did a great job too, and while he got the inflections right, he didn't try to mimic Ben's voice, and he sounded really good. He was great, and did a great job. Had all the bass parts down really well."

    Kasim and The New Cars
07.00 - Last week Kasim Sulton played three performances (on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings) as part of The New Cars with Todd Rundgren (guitar), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards) and Prairie Prince (drums) in Los Angeles, California.

There were various accounts about whether these were rehearsals or show-cases but all three were filmed by at least three cameras and the announcer on Sunday indicated that they may be released later. Nothing has been reported anywhere on the Internet about the performance on Wednesday but it seems that they played the same set list each evening which consisted of:

Kasim Sulton Just What I Needed
    Let's Go
    You're All I Got Tonight
    You Might Think
    Best Friend's Girl
    I Saw The Light
    Candy-O
    Not Tonight
    Drive
    Moving In Stereo
    Shake It Up
    Dangerous Type
    Bye Bye Love

    Open My Eyes
    Good Times Roll

There are photos of the performance on Friday from this page onwards on the messageboard attached to TRConnection.com.

The highlight of the performance for lots of fans was Kasim singing lead on Drive as his rich voice suited that song perfectly. Even Ben Orr's wife who was in the audience on Friday apparently commented on how well he sang it.

Check back later for detailed reviews of both the Friday and Sunday shows.

    Kasim and The New Cars
Kasim Sulton 00.15 - As I write this the show-case is still taking place so no news has emerged so far other than the venue has changed from the one detailed below.

(Btw, Concerts.com have changed their setup since yesterday so that the link below now no longer will allow you to access the videos!)

To the left is the logo that was displayed on the car in the promo video clips (it's a shame that Kasim's name isn't listed first....or maybe it's in order of age!).

Friday 20th January 2006 - tonight Kasim plays a show-case in Los Angeles
    Kasim and The New Cars
12.00 - This link has 8 videoclips of The New Cars music (look under both The Cars and The New Cars). Interestingly in #SP35231 all of the bands names are written on the car but they only list 4 names - Praiarie Prince's isn't listed.
    Kasim and The New Cars
01.30 - There's a short 30 second promo clip of 4 of the 5 New Cars here. Kasim is shown in profile a couple of times and you can clearly hear his bass! (The video is about halfway down on the right.)
    Kasim and The New Cars
01.00 - Although no tour dates have been announced yet (the latest rumor is that they will start being announced next month), already this thread is discussing one "important" aspect of the tour....what will be Todd Rundgren's hairstyle (and color) for the tour!

    Thursday 19th January 2006
    Kasim show case gigs
15.00 - It's been confirmed that Kasim and the band will be playing another special "event" on Sunday too!
    Kasim's show case(s)
12.00 - According to a post on one mailing list Kasim and the band will be playing another one of these "events" on Sunday too! (Please note that this has not been officially confirmed.)
    Kasim Sulton Kasim and Kweevak.com
11.00 - Kweevak.com have re-launched their website and Kasim Sulton receives a mention on the front page of their site as he is one of their "many musical greats" who has been interviewed on their online radio show.

There's also a nice looking page on the site here about Kasim and his KSultonBass.

(Quid Pro Quo won Kweevak.com's People's Choice CD Of The Year for 2003.)

Kasim's show case "event" in Los Angeles tomorrow
05.15 - There's been lots of speculation, discussion and rumors posted on various messageboards and mailing lists about Kasim's show case "event" (as he called it!) in Los Angeles tomorrow!
Most fans believe that it's for The New Cars to show case some new music plus record either one video or a DVD's worth, although at first some fans thought it may be for a new support band for Kasim.
On the messageboard attached to TRConnection.com (in a thread which has had more than 50 posts!) there is some talk that Glen Burtnik may be involved (but that's partly because people got confused about which Friday Kasim is playing the show case!).
Doug Kennedy jokes on his website that Kasim will be playing as part of Dick & The Deer Gutters (although he doesn't specify if Kasim is Dick, a deer or one of the gutters!).
On another mailing list someone posted that he'd heard that in fact The New Cars will be playing three show-cases (with only one for fans to watch) but nothing has been confirmed officially.
Kasim Sulton Kasim on UK TV
05.00 - For those in UK, Kasim Sulton will be on The Biography Channel at both noon and 5.00pm GMT today when the episode of Classic Albums about Bat Out Of Hell is aired. This documentary includes Kasim being interviewed about the album.

Classic Albums was a UK produced television documentary series which focused on a different album each episode. The Bat Out Of Hell episode was first shown on British television on Saturday 23rd October 1999 and this link has more info about the show. The episode is now available on DVD on worldwide release.

(The sign up box can be found at the top right of the page http://www.kasimsulton.com/ - the flash version of the site at http://www.kasimsulton.com/gamma/index.html does not have the facility to sign up for the mailing list.)

    KasimInfo.com
16.30 - The News section of the site has been brought up to date.
    Kasim's show case on Friday
Kasim Sulton 13.30 - Although the address of the venue has been posted elsewhere on the Internet, out of respect to Kasim I won't post it here until after the event but the facility where they're playing contains 7 separate stages, all with top of the range equipment.

The largest room has the dimensions 40' x 38' (with the stage being 20' x 38' x 18") and the "most intimate" is shown in the photo to the right so all 30 or so fans who are attending will have a great view whichever area they use! (Kasim described it as "the Sound Stage" but none are called that on the map on the website.)

(More details about the event will be posted here afterwards.)

    Kasim at The Tin Angel
03.00 - With only sixteen more days to go before Kasim Sulton's gig at The Tin Angel in Philadelphia, PA fans have already posted that they are travelling from all over the US and Europe to see Kasim perform! People have said that they plan on attending from several states on the East Coast, Chicago, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Florida, England, Ireland and Germany!
It's just a shame that Kasim will only be playing for 45 minutes when usually he has the whole 90 minute set to himself....

Previous press releases about Kasim's signature bass can be read here and here. The website for Kasim's bass is at KSultonBass.com.

Many thanks to MicheleMac for this link.

    Video Of The Week
Kasim Sulton 01.15 - By popular request(!) the Video Of The Week section of the site will be staying (as opposed to reverting back to Video Of The Month).

This week's Video Of The Week was taken at The Bitter End in New York City and is of Kasim Sulton singing a song that he rarely sings live on stage nowadays (even though it's lots of fans' favorite track on The Basement Tapes) - All The Right Reasons.

(The link to the video is on the front page of the site.)

    Kasim and The New Cars???
16.45 - As I post this there are already 20 posts in this thread on the messageboard attached to TRConnection.com about Kasim's mailing yesterday!
(I especially like the phrase "Showcase of Kasim's new band"!)
    Yellow Cab
12.30 - Several people have made comments on various mailing lists and messageboard about Yellow Cab since it was posted on KasimSulton.com back in December. The comments include:
"I am surprise how much I like Kasim's internet release "Yellow Cab". It's introspective, has solid lyrics, a good beat, nice hooks, harmonies and is very Beatlesque."
"It's lovely...beautiful and obviously inspired by his Broadway adventures playing in Movin' Out. Nice work...good production...can't wait for more of the same."
"The song's ok but I'm disappointed that 3 years on from Quid Pro Quo and there's still no Kas-penned music. As the whole song's on the site it looks like there won't be a re-release of QPQ now."
    "Great song !"
"It's a cool tune.I don't own any of Kasim's solo records but have heard cuts. But this beats them all. The next album could be a must have."
"It is great!! I love it."
"I wonder if it's Kasim's best tune. Stylistically, it reminds me of McCartney's latest CD."
    "Pretty catchy. Quite Beatle-esque."
"I took a listen. It is very beatle-esque."
"I think this is one of Kasim's best, instantly likeable song compared to others. Sounds very Paul McCartney though."
    "Very nice song."
"It's OK, definitely one of Kasim's better ones, but his music in general doesn't do much for me."
    "I loved it."
(These were comments from fans of Todd Rundgren, The Cars and Meat Loaf as well as fans of Kasim. A lot of fans seem to think that Kasim himself wrote the song.)
    Photos of Kasim
01.15 - Jo Milos has 52 great photos of Kasim Sulton (and the rest of The Liars band) in her photo album here.
(This photo is so close-up that you can even read his name on his microphone!)
    Kasim's Showcase
01.00 - Concerning the e-mail which Kasim sent yesterday, he is playing a "showcase" this coming Friday in the Los Angeles area. The following is part of an e-mail which several people received after responding to Kasim's e-mail:
"The 'event' I'm inviting you to will take place on Friday, January 20th @ 8:00pm.
Ask for the showcase performance on the Sound Stage and mention you were invited by me.
It's a private show for a select few people. You'll know the music, you'll recognize the musicians (one of them will be your's truly).
I'm not sure if there will be a guest list with names on it. If thats the case, I will contact you for a full name to be included on any 'list' there may be.
    Hope to see you there.
    Kasim

    Kasim on E-Bay
02.45 - I didn't link to this before as it's not an official release but a CD copy of Lights On (signed by both Kasim Sulton and Thommy Price) reached a staggering $102.60 after 8 bids! (The opening price was $19.99 and there have been 60 hits on the auction page.)

    Message from Kasim
02.30 - Early this morning Kasim Sulton sent a message to his mailing list asking for any South California residents to e-mail him "for a special, one time only offer" to be "part of something special"!
(The best guesses on the Internet so far are that it's for recording of The New Cars!)
