Kasim Sulton Bass Clinic and Solo Gig, Rhino's Union Pub, West Seneca, NY - 04/30/11

Review by Julie Hadley:
Anyone who has ever dreamed of raising a guitar pick in the air to salute an adoring crowd had an opportunity to hear what that’s really like from a musician who has been in the business for 35 years. Kasim Sulton, singer, songwriter, bassist for Todd Rundgren and Utopia, and a frequent collaborator with acts as diverse as Meat Loaf, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Celine Dion, held a clinic and performed in a live solo performance held on April 30 at Rhino’s Union Pub, 2330 Union Road, West Seneca, NY.

Kasim opened the clinic cradling his own K. Sulton Bass. It’s lighter in weight, he explained, than other bass guitars, but the combination of woods in the construction give his bass a familiar resonance.

He treated the crowd, including many young music students, to a primer in perseverance and hard work, sharing stories about touring with Meatloaf and playing bass with Joan Jett ("dum dum dumdumdum…it really doesn’t get much harder than that…but Joan’s great!"). After taking questions, Kasim returned to play selections of his own music. Trading off between bass, acoustic guitar and keyboard, Kasim channeled the ’79 version of Billy Joel – his voice has a similar purity, and his songwriting is as personal.

It was an evening well spent…
